Thoughts about my first day at work

Today was my first day at my first job. Well, technically it wasn't my first job, as I have also distributed some flyers but this is my first official job. I work as a part-time secretary for a language school. I don't have anything crazy or difficult to do, as I am there in order to generally inform those who want to learn a language how things work around there. And now that I've briefly analyzed my first job let me talk about my first day there.

All the time my heart was pounding. I have to make sure that nothing bad happens and I am responsible for the business's image. Being friendly and polite isn't a problem but when a potential customer comes in, I should persuade him or her to work with us but that is not always an easy thing to do. Plus, as I said, for the time that I am there I have to make sure that no problems or troubles arise. Turning all the lights off, locking the doors, securing the windows are completely my responsibilities.

The best part of the day was when a woman came in. She just wanted to ask a question but she was the first customer I've ever talked to and that makes her special to me. And actually she was the only person who came in, in general that day, which makes her even more special, as it was kinda of a boring day. But just from the little that we talked, I felt ecstatic.

I guess this is why people want to get a job. Besides earning money, you feel useful. You feel capable of doing stuff that help people and lead to the progress of the business. In other words, you are contributing to the well-being of something bigger than you and that is awesome.

I might be exaggerating either because it was my first day and everything looked amazing and auspicious or because working can also make you feel independent. I am now an adult and despite of how terrifying this sounds, I have the responsibility to manage to survive in this scary world. It won't be easy but I am going to try.

I know that this sounds a bit cheesy and I know that there will be times that I will want to give up everything, but I will have this post to remind me that I can do anything. I wanted a job and I found a job. The only thing that can stop me from making my dreams and goals reality is myself and I won't let me do that.

And I encourage you to do the same. Stop postponing your dreams. Even if you don't have a family member or a friend to have your back, don't use that as an excuse. You can pursue your dream and transform it into reality all by yourself. All you have to do is actually try. And believe me, the feeling of living your dream is priceless. Yes, you'll still live an imperfect life, as you'll always be worrying about messing things up and you'll be tired, but this will be the lifestyle you chose and you love.

Now let's go back to my first-day-working experience. My conclusions? Working is scary, because you have responsibilities and you mustn't screw it up. However, working is cool when you do something that interests you and challenges you. So, go out there and search for jobs. You may not find your dream job right away but the working experience that you will have gained until you do so is extremely valuable.
