Thoughts about living without internet

If you are a hardcore subscriber or if you just noticed that I had been gone for a while, you may be wondering what I have been up to all this time. Besides from studying and working, nothing amazing has happened to my life. There was an evil reason for my absence and that was that I didn't have access to the internet.

To cut a long story short, I had a lot of complaints against the company that provided me with internet and instead of renewing my contract I asked for my line to be transferred to another company. But in order for this to happen several days were needed. As you can guess, now I do have internet in my house but the previous approximately two weeks were a living nightmare.

A nightmare not because I am obsessed with internet but because it is needed for my academic life. I need to always be able to connect to the internet in order to keep up with my professors' announcements and their notes. What is more, Google and Google Scholar are extremely useful tools for gathering material for my different projects and papers.

However, I am going to be honest and admit that I felt sad that all this time I couldn't watch my favorite shows - I still haven't seen the new episodes of Stranger Things 😩- or that I couldn't keep up with my favorite youtubers' lives (I guess that I don't have to mention that once my access was granted, Youtube was the first app that I opened).

Of course, there were ways for me to manage to connect to the internet. Having MBs on my phone, visiting friends' houses, going to the library or to coffee shops where there is free internet for everyone to use were my temporary solutions to my problem.

So, you may ask "Don't you think that not having access to the internet actually did you good, as you went out and it was a chance to spend some extra time with your friends?" and my answer is no. I do see my friends regularly and I don't need any excuse in order to meet with them except that I've missed them or that something either positive or negative happened to their lives or to mine and we want to share it with one another. On the contrary, being unable to connect to the internet made it difficult for me to keep in touch with people that live far from me, like in a different city or a different country. As for the going out part, I'll have to admit that it was fun doing some work in a different place. However, I can't study all of my subject at a public place, because I find it easier to understand and remember things when I read them aloud, which is something that I cannot do in a library or in a café, as I will be disturbing the people around me.

To conclude, like it or not internet has become an integral part of our everyday life, as it facilitates our professional or academic career and our entertainment. However, remember to leave the devices and gadgets aside and live and enjoy life with your fellow human beings, since no matter how hard you laughed while watching a viral video, the times you spend with the people you love will make you appreciate life.
