5 Good Moments of 2020
Last few hours of a crazy awful year. Exactly because it has been so fraught with problems and worries that scarred our souls I wanted to lift our spirits by turning the spotlight on the good things that happened in 2020.
The Earthshot 🌍
When the TED talk about this new project called Earthshot showed up at my home page, my faith to people got resparkled. Political figures from different parts of the world agreed to put a ten-year plan into action so as to encourage scientists and researchers to find solutions to several ecological crises. Giving motive and funds to scientists and scholars is a remarkable move that benefits not only the scientific community but also the whole world.
Human solidarity 👬
Healthcare workers are the ones who have been at the front line to fight this unknown virus and have been working long hours to help those who get seriously ill. Little actions of people, like applauding at their windows and balconies for the work of doctors and nurses, are extremely important in order to express our appreciation to workers that do everything they can to see us healthy.
Additionally, it is heartwarming to see people helping those either in emotional or materialistic need by a wide range of volunteering activities. I heard about little girls buying toilet rolls, they bought with their own allowance, and giving them to their senior neighbours and people sending letters to elderly and so much more that do not reach news outlets.
Elections in America 📨
I don't know much about politics, but I'm glad that Americans didn't vote for a person who was publicly talking inappropriately to and about women, who wanted to create literal and metaphorical walls among people, who is famous for telling lies in his speeches, who doesn't believe in climate change, and so on. I am not saying that Biden is a saint, but at least I believe that he is a better choice than Trump. And better late than never, Kamala Harris became the first woman and the first black and Asian vice president of the United States.
Steps to end period poverty 👩
And since we're talking about advances in women-related issues, a bill about providing period products free of charge was introduced and voted to become a law in Scotland. Schools and universities will be obliged to have tampons and pants in their toilets for people to take for free. This is an amazing measure as something so essential for female hygiene will stop being considered a luxury item. I hope more countries all over the world will follow Scotland's example.

Dreams coming true ☺
I know that with all the lockdowns, it feels like life has been paused for all those months. However, life goes on despite all the adversities. I was lucky to fulfill my dream this year. I got accepted in the University of Nottingham and I am doing a Master's Degree in Creative Writing. It is weird to be here, especially since Nottingham along with other areas in Great Britain moved to Tier 4 today, but I can still go out for long walks and enjoy this beautiful city. Most importantly, the programme is even more fascinating than I expected. So, dreams do come true even in times like 2020.
And in order to end this post with a bang, I encourage you to click the link to the hilarious video of Lucas about some funny things that happened in 2020. I hope that you can always see the good in any negative situation as even the fact that you can pay the internet bill or you could afford the device you're using right now can count as one reason to feel grateful for your life. Happy New Year.
