7 Books I Love Written by Women 👭

It's International Women's Day today 🙌 What better occasion to talk about some books I love written by women? I am delighted to seize this opportunity to share some of my favourite novels. The books below are fiction, belong to various genres, and are presented in no particular order. Are you interested in some book recs?

1. Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte (1847)

Lockwood, the new tenant of Thrushcross Gorge on the bleak Yorkshire moors, is forced to seek shelter at Wuthering Heights. There he discovers the history of the tempestuous events that took place years before: the intense passion between the foundling Heathcliff and Catherine Earnshaw, her betrayal of him and the bitter vengeance he now wreaks on the innocent heirs of the past.

2. Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi

Effia and Esi: two sisters with two very different destinies. One sold into slavery; one a slave trader's wife. The consequences of their fate reverberate through the generations that follow: from the Gold Coast of Africa to the plantations of Mississippi; from the missionary schools of Ghana to the dive bars of Harlem. Spanning continents and generations, Yaa Gyasi has written a miraculous novel -an intense, heartbreaking story of one family and, through their lives, the story of America itself.

3. The Little Stranger by Sarah Waters (2009)

In a dusty post-war summer in rural Warwickshire, a doctor is called to a patient at lonely Hundreds Hall. Home to the Ayres family for over two centuries, the Georgian house, once grand and handsome, is now in decline, its masonry crumbling, its gardens choked with weeds, its owners —mother, son and daughter— struggling to keep pace.

But are the Ayreses haunted by something more sinister than a dying way of life? Little does Dr Faraday know how closely, and how disturbingly, their story is about to become entwined with his.

4. Everything I never Told You by Celeste Ng (2014)

'Lydia is dead. But they don't know this yet." So begins this exquisite novel about a Chinese-American family living in 1970s small-town Ohio. Lydia is the favourite child of Marilyn and James Lee, and her parents are determined that she will fulfill the dreams they were unable to pursue. But when Lydia's body is found in the local lake, the delicate balancing act that has been keeping the Lee family together is destroyed, tumbling them all into chaos.

5. Can You Hear Me? by Elena Varvello [translated into English in 2018]

1978. Ponte, a small community in Northern Italy. An unbearably hot summer like many others. Elia Furenti is sixteen, living an unremarkable life of moderate unhappiness, until the day the beautiful, damaged Anna returns to Ponte and firmly propels Elia to the edge of adulthood.

But then everything starts to unravel. Elia's father, Ettore, is let go from his job and loses himself in the darkest corners of his mind.

A young boy is murdered.

And a girl climbs into a van and vanished in the deep, dark woods.

6. Convenience Store Woman by Sayaka Murata (2018)

Keiko doesn't fit in. She's thirty-six years old, she's never had a boyfriend and she's been working in the same convenience store for eighteen years. Her parents wish she'd get a better job. Her friends wonder why she won't get married. But Keiko knows what makes her happy, and she's not going to let anyone take her away from her convenience store.

7. The Love Hypothesis by Ali Hazelwood (2021)

As a third-year PhD candidate, Olive Smith doesn't believe in lasting romantic relationships but her best friend does, and that's what got her into this situation. Convincing Anh that Olive is on her way to a happily ever after was always going to be tough; scientists require proof. So, like any self-respecting woman, Olive panics and kisses the first man she sees.

That man is none other than Adam Carlsen, a young hotshot professor and well-known ass. Which is why Olive is positively floored when he agrees to keep her charade a secret and be her fake boyfriend. But when a big science conference goes haywire and Adam surprises her again with his unyielding support (and his unyielding abs), their little experiment feels dangerously close to combustion.
