I'm Thinking of Reading a Book 💁🏻‍♀️

Happy July! Before listing the books I read last month, I have to remind you about the Reading Nobel Winner Authors for A Week post because I won't mention those books here as I have already expressed my thoughts on them at that post. So, let's see what else I read in June.

By starting my Monthly Wrap Up series, my suspicion that I'm a slow reader was confirmed since the number of books I read monthly is much smaller compared to the tons of books that BookTubers finish during the same time period. So, I decided to challenge myself by trying to see how many books I can read in just a week. In order to make things more interesting, I gave a theme to this challenge; all books had to be written by authors who have won the Nobel prize in Literature. Are you intrigued? On 25 May 2020, George Floyd, a 46-year-old African-American, was arrested for buying cigarettes with a counterfeit $20 bill in Minneapolis. About ten minutes after the employee reported the illegal transaction, two police officers found George Floyd with two friends in a car close to the grocery store. After having been targeted with a gun and having been handcuffed, George Floyd resisted entering the police car. This is when Derek Chauvin, a 44-year-old white police officer, arrived at the scene and in his attempt to put him inside the car, he caused Floyd to fall on the ground. Then, Chauvin placed his knee on Floyd's neck and kept it there for about nine minutes although bystanders were filming him and Floyd himself was stating that he couldn't breath. At some point, Floyd lost consciousness and after he was transported to a hospital, he was announced dead. As I shared at my May 2020 Favourites post, I was stressed in May because I submitted a scholarship application. This stress hindered my motivation to read. However, I did some reading, and I'm here to share the books I read with you.

Yesterday was a great day for me. Yesterday I accepted an offer of attending the MA Creative Writing course at University of Nottingham. And from now on -although lessons start in September- I am officially a postgraduate student. 😄 The aim of this post isn't to brag about my life -although I see that I totally did so in the introductory paragraph- but to show everyone, including myself, that it is totally possible to make your dreams come true.

To be honest, that month wasn't the best for me book-wise. Although the books I read were interesting, I wasn't blown away by them, which made my reading speed and my excitement to read decrease a bit. However, these books are worth sharing as the reason that I didn't enjoy them that much has to do with my personal reading preferences.

As you may or may not know, I graduated from university last summer and I applied to several UK universities for a masters last January. Since then I have been expecting their answers. Thankfully, I have received some positive answers from a couple of them. My concern, however, is that my top two universities haven't contacted me yet.

I don't think that much explanation is needed; I'm just trying to see how many films I can watch in just 3 days. The only thing that I should say is that I'll try to be concise when it comes to my comments on the films as reviewing them isn't the purpose of this post. So, let's see what I watched.

A new section about a topic that I'm very passionate about is finally introduced to the blog. From now on, every month I'm going to share with you all the books I read the previous month. I have to be honest and say from the beginning that you shouldn't expect any crazy number; I usually read 3 to 5 books a month. So, I'm going to stop with this introductory blab and just talk about the books I read in March.

I have to start this post by saying how excited I am since this is my first book review here in the blog 🎉. The book we're going to discuss is Ian McEwan's novella The Cockroach . The themes discussed are thought-provoking but the characters are not so interesting.
