Thoughts about going back to university
Summer is officially over when you have to get up early in the morning -either it is 6 or 11 a.m., it is equally bad, as in both cases waking up can be a brutal act- and go to class.
Although my posts are usually for everyone, I would like to dedicate this one to university or college students, who I feel -or I hope- can easily identify with my thoughts. I am myself a university student for two years now and I have a lot to say about the experience and the system.
The first and most basic difficulty that students like me have to face is being actual adults. It is our responsibility to check our department's webpage and look for announcements, such as when the lessons begin, in which class we are and most importantly if our friends are in the same class with us and so on. In addition to that, after the exams, we have to regularly check a different website in order to see our grades. All the above come in contrast with how things were in high school. Then, all the necessary pieces of information were given to us by the teachers. All we had to do is just listen to them, no searching, no nothing.
Another thing that the students must do at some point of their studies is to select a specific number of subjects from the list with all the subjects that are offered. This is actually cool, you'll think, as you get to choose subjects that you are trully interested in and make you eager to leave your bed and go to class everyday. Yes, but what are you supposed to do when the number of classes you want to attend is bigger than the number of classes that you can actually choose? How can you make up your mind and leave behind something that you like? Because there is always a possibility that the subject you like may not be offered at the next semester. So, you can only hope that you are a lucky guy.
If you have reached this point of the post -which I hope that everybody did- you see that all the things mentioned above are actually positive traits of univerities despite the fact that they are presented in a negative way. Because, yes, a person should be able to find out on his own basic information without having someone else guiding him. Furthermore, you ought to go to a university or college that you are interested in all of the classes. This means that you made the right choice.
Unfortunately, there are some true flaws in the system, such as derelict buildings or classrooms, unprofessional or corrupted teachers. I have heard of professors who have asked for money from their students in order to give them a passing grade. What is more, even though in universities we are not supposed to pay for education, I have attended classes in which we are obliged to purchase some books.
So, although there are still things that need to be attended and fixed, education is important. Despite of all the complaining, going through such an institution not only prepares you for the workplace and provides you with important requirements for it but also helps you become a responsible and mature adult.
P.S. I know that not everyone is meant to go to college or to university. There are people who can make it in life without a degree. I just want to encourage the ones who have enrolled in such institutions not to give up. Also, the things above may not apply to all universities but they do happen in mine.
